In 1997, Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi composed the music for Acoustic (I Marc Quattro oggi – Suoni acustici degli anni ’60-’70) (1997) on Italy’s Costanza Records, an album of nineteen original compositions that features Antonello Vannucchi on piano and organ, Silvano Chimenti on guitar, Alfredo Paixao on double bass, and Beppe Basile on drums and percussion. The collection of jazz, classical, and rock instrumentals was recorded at Studio Telecinesound in Rome, produced by Stefano Torossi–and reissued last month by Deneb Records under the title Film Characters: Cinematic – Electronic – Easy Listening.

The limited release library music album initially available in CD is the fourth Costanza Records’ album from the Musica per commenti Series produced by Stefano Torossi to be reissued in 2015 including Planet Woman: Documentary – Drama – Lifestyle and Check Up: Daytime TV – 1990s – Background Music from 1999 and Crime and Punishment: Documentary – News – Beds from 1998.

Deneb reissued another pair of Musica per commenti sonori albums produced by Torossi in 2014, Federico Arezzini and Torossi’s Tangos: World Music – Argentina – Documentary, first released in 1998, and Claudio Gizzi and Torossi’s Great Images: Nature – Documentary – Electronica from 1996–originally titled Musica per commenti sonori: Elicottero (Panoramiche dall’aria). All of these albums are now available at major digital music retailers in most markets.

Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi first worked together on their Musica per commenti sonori LP for Costanza Records in 1969 (CO 10005). In 1974, they later collaborated on Feelings, with Giancarlo Gazzani and Puccio Roelens, first pressed on Carosello, Strumentali: Genere computermusic – homo tecnologicus in 1986, and Strumentali: Emozionale in 1987, both on Fonit Cetra.

Torossi also served as the producer of Brugnolini’s tracks on Strumentali: Il mondo del lavoro in 1989, with Antonio Sechi, and several compilations including Strumentali: Vita d’oggi in 1991, Commenti musicali: Musica d’epoca – prehistoria e storia antica in 1993, and Musica per commenti sonori: Check Up and Sport & Travel on Rai Trade, both in 1999.

Lately, this correspondent can’t stop spinning Come Upstair, a progressive rock-jazz LP by Oscar Lindok and His Friends released on Picci Records in 1973. Lindok, better known as Giacomo Dell’Orso, composed half of the tracks on the album.

In addition, it seems an uncredited Sandro Brugnolini worked on all twelve compositions including the opening track, “My Way To Mexico,” which is also attributed to Nedo Benvenuti.

An interview with composer and alto sax player Alessandro “Sandro” Brugnolini includes musical highlights from Miles Before And After, the 1960 LP he played sax, arranged, and acted as the main writer on for the Modern Jazz Gang, as well as Underground and Overground from 1970, Utopia in 1972, and several soundtracks such as Gli arcangeli, with the Modern Jazz Gang and Helen Merrill on vocals, in 1962, and Gungala la pantera nuda and Dov’é L’Australia, both from 1968 with Luigi Malatesta. Music from the series of albums Sandro Brugnolini did under his alias Narassa in the early to mid-1970s with pianist-keyboard player Amedeo Tommasi, including Tensione dinamica, Guerra e angoscia, Camera-Car, and Made In U.S.A., is also located HERE.

More Music from the Artists: Antonello Vannucchi

Antonello Vannucchi and Stefano Torossi have collaborated on several albums including I Marc 4’s eponymous 1970 release (GLP 1005), an LP that features Vannucchi on Hammond organ and piano, Maurizio Majorana on bass, Carlo Pes on guitar, and Roberto Podio on drums and percussion, with the compositions credited to “Fotriafa.” This alias of Stefano Torossi, like “Farlocco” and “Melodicon,” has been used on several albums.

Five tracks from I Marc 4 (GLP 1005) are currently found on an audio sound clip posted online including “Suoni armonici,” “Happy Beat,” “Ray Ban,” “Rum And Coke,” and “Asfalto in agguato”:

The compositions from this album have been licensed on numerous compilations including Love Routes: Jazz Romance in Prague, Winter Classics: The Instrumental Music Playlist to Dream On, and Kitchen Music Pleasures: The Smooth Jazz Playlist to Enjoy Your Cooking, all released as digital downloads by ExtraBall Records in 2015.

In 1961, Antonello Vannucchi played vibraphone on Quartetto di Lucca’s Quartetto LP on RCA that also features Giampiero Giusti on piano, Giovanni Tommaso on bass, and Vito Tommaso on piano.

Guitarist Silvano Chimenti played on Sandro Brugnolini’s pair of classic albums released months apart in 1970, Underground and Overground. Each album uses the same musicians: Angelo Baroncini and Silvano Chimenti on guitar, Giorgio Carnini on organ, Enzo Restuccia on drums, and Giovanni Tommaso on bass.

The AMS 2009 CD reissue of Overground, including two bonus tracks, and the most recent Underground reissue in 2014 on SONOR Music Editions that includes a bonus CD with the deluxe vinyl are highly recommended.
