Alexander had been thrilled when Ginger had held his hand
while they walked along the edge of the pond.
He took her over to the flowerbeds thinking that
would be a nice setting for the question he wanted to ask her.
He started with just some small talk
about school. Then he started to work his way up to asking her.
"Ginger, I really like you and I
hope you like me too." he was talking a little faster than normal because he was nervous.
|

Alexander works up the nerve to ask a
question |
|
"Of course I like you ‘Zander." she smiled at him.
He reached for her hand, "I like you more than any girl I’ve
ever met. What I mean is…," Alexander was beginning to stumble a bit,
"Ginger, will
you go steady with me?"
Ginger felt her heart flutter. She was hoping he was going to ask her to
the homecoming dance, but this was so much more. Because she wasn’t expecting the question she
didn’t know how to answer him. Then she remembered a conversation she had with her dad before he
died.

Alexander tells Ginger how he feels |
|
She used to get annoyed when people wouldn’t use her full name, but one day her father had said
"Someday you’ll find the right guy, that when he calls you Ginny, you’ll love the way it sounds."
It hadn’t made sense to her when she was little.
"Call me Ginny and ask me again." she said.
Alexander gave her an odd look. He knew she preferred her full name and tried hard never to
slip up and call her Ginny no matter what he called her in his private thoughts.
"Ginny," He
paused, he liked the sound of that, "Ginny, will you be my
girl?"
|

She gives him permission to call her Ginny |
|
Her dad was right. She didn’t know that you could hear feelings but when ‘Zander called her by that
name she heard all the tenderness that went with it. That’s how she knew.
"Yes." she said quietly
holding back tears of joy.
"My Ginny." Alexander said and he hugged her tight.
"My ‘Zander." she said
returning the hug.
Then they both laughed and he wiped happy tears from her cheek.

She agrees to going steady |
|
The day was quite a success. ‘Zander and Ginny were officially going steady and had confirmed
going to the Homecoming dance together.
Cassandra couldn’t remember ever being this happy. She
and Sterling had played like kids and then strolled along the path arm in arm. He had pushed her
on the swings until she was high enough that she felt she could almost fly.
They were all ready
to call it a day and head home for a nice relaxing dinner.
But Mortimer still hadn’t caught a
fish.
|

It has been a very nice day in the park |
|
Mortimer was actually being sneaky.
He was waiting until dark to catch his fish. He knew how
romantic a nighttime walk around the pond could be. He and Bella had loved to come here for a
stroll in the moonlight.
As soon as the sun went down he finally put some bait on his hook and
cast it out. It didn’t take long after that for him to feel a tug on the line and he reeled
in his fish.
|

Mortimer delayed catching a fish until dark |
|
"Ho-Ho!" he exclaimed as he examined his fish. "I don’t think you’re the only one who got caught today."
Mortimer chucked and then laughed aloud at his own joke.
"Alexander and Ginger caught each other too."
He laughed some more,"“Now if only Sterling could reel in Cass, I know she’s hooked she just won’t admit
it to herself."
Mortimer tucked his fish away and started packing up as an idea came to him to help nudge
Cassandra in the right direction.

Not the only catch of the day |
