The next day Dustin invited Lilith over. He was hoping that they could get to know each other a little better. After his boring date with Angela he was thinking that maybe the sweet innocent girl-next-door wasn't what he wanted.
"Thanks for coming to visit, Lilith." Dustin said as he greeted her,
"I know how busy your freshman year can be."
"It is extremely busy so why don't we go inside and get right to the point of this visit." Lilith said.

"Look I know your date with Angela was a flop. I know you are probably thinking that she's too tame for you. And that's exactly why I think you both need a break for a while. I need you to promise not to contact her for a little while." Lilith got right to the heart of the matter.
"Won't it hurt her feelings if I don't call? I mean the date may have been lousy but I still care about her, I don't want to hurt her." Dustin was surprised at her suggestion.

|
"What would you say if you called her?" Lilith asked
"I'm not sure exactly. I guess I'd try to let her down easy. Tell her we can still be friends...." Dustin stopped talking when he noticed Lilith's hard look.
"That is exactly why I don't want you to call her." Lilith said,
"What you will end up doing is officially breaking up."
"But isn't that the point? Then we can both move on." Dustin argued
"NO!" Lilith was adamant, "That will only make things worse."
|
 |
|
"So you expect me to just not call her at all? Am I supposed to avoid her when I see her on campus? I can't do that!", Dustin threw his hands up in disgust,
"I can't start seeing other girls until I set things straight with Angela. She needs to know where we stand, I can't just leave her hanging like this."
"Yes you can! And you will!" Lilith was determined that he understand.
"Let me explain this to you. Right now the two of you aren't
even an official couple. She broke up with you over the summer
and though you had one lousy date since then it doesn't mean you
are a couple again."
|

|
|
"So if you call her and break up with her you are only going to make things worse" Lilith continued.
"Please just back off for a while. If you do see her on campus don't be rude just treat her like any other friend, but DON'T treat her like an ex-girlfriend."
"But...", Dustin began.
"You both need some time away from each other to find out who you really are. I just don't think you need to go through a painful breakup first, it won't do either of you any good." Lilith said

Dustin finally understood what Lilith was telling him and he agreed to not contact Angela for a while. He did see Angela on campus occasionally but only from a distance so he never actually had to chat with her.
He started hanging out with other girls, mostly in larger social groups and at parties and such. Not officially dating but at least spending time with other girls and getting a feel for the type of girl that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

The school year quickly came to a close and Dustin passed his final exams with very good marks.
He was looking forward to spending the summer at home with his family. He just needed to pack a few more things and he would be on his way.
